The right answer was given. It goes back to long before motorcycles. Most all peolple mount horses from the left side. This really does not make sense either since most people are right handed. It seems that your right leg and your right arm would be much better to pull yourself up with than your weak side.

But, it goes back to a time when men rode horses into battle. Most men were right handed and wore their swords on their left side. Having a long sword on the left side of your body made the left side mount necessary. It would be hard to throw the left leg over the horse with a heavy sword on your left hip. So, most everyone mounted horses from the left side.

The need for the sword disappeared, but the act of mounting from the left remained. When young riders were taught, they were taught to mount from the left. This carried on to modern times and now holds true for motorcycles and bicycles as well.

I thought this was interesting when I heard and wanted to share it with the rest of you.
